The day has finally arrived, with the National Breastfeeding Social Marketing Campaign commercials being shown for the first time on television tonight. The campaign would not have been possible without the passion, commitment and willingness to share of individuals, groups and organisations that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. As the commercials say – 'you're part of the picture too'!

The aim of this campaign is to contribute to efforts to increase the number of babies being exclusively breastfed for six months and the proportion of infants who continue to be breastfed beyond six months. Breastfeeding gives our children the very best start in life, yet some New Zealand babies are not breastfed or only breastfed for a short time.

The campaign commercials, which will begin screening on TV tonight, are now live on the campaign website: www.breastfeeding.org.nz. They can be found under 'About the campaign'.

Also on the website are images of the campaign posters, and information about how to order them, as well as the launch media release and questions and answers document.

If you want to catch the commercials live on TV, the first one will play between 6 and 6.20pm during TV3 News. They will continue to play during the evening, appearing during Toi Whakaari, One News, Haa, Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Shortland Street, Kupuhuna, Te Kaea, Border Security, Crossing Jordan, Cashmere Mafia, Tangaroa with Pio, Inside Story, Takataapui, Brothers & Sisters, and Law & Order.

Six commercials were developed in total. Two commercials are 30 seconds long, with one featuring a Māori family and the other a Pacific family. The four 15 second commercials have tips to support and encourage mum to breastfeed.

The two longer commercials will play tonight, with all commercials played on a rotating basis from tomorrow. The commercials will play for two weeks, then take a break, and be back on air on 7 September for another two weeks. The last TV activity for the year will start on 19 October and run for a further two weeks.

Radio commercials are currently being developed and will be added to the website when completed. The radio activity will commence on 4 August, running for two weeks on iwi and Pacific radio stations. Future radio activity will run concurrent with TV activity. Print advertising will be placed in the August/September issue of Kiwi Parent and Mana magazines; the August issue of Tu Mai and the September/October issue of Spasifik.
